Arsenic-tainted drinking water in 66,663 habitations, Centre tells Rajya Sabha

  1. Issue: Drinking water in about 66,663 habitations across the country is affected due to the presence of arsenic and fluorides
  2. Steps taken: Govt is working to provide safe, clean drinking water and has evolved various schemes in this regard
  3. Piped drinking water would be provided to homes of 80% population in the country by 2022
  4. State subject: Drinking water is a State subject and the Centre supplemented the States’ efforts by providing them with technical and financial assistance through centrally-sponsored National Rural Drinking Water programme and other programmes
  5. Mining areas: The Centre has evolved a special scheme for States where mining takes place
  6. The Niti Ayog has provided special funds to the tune of ₹800 crore for improving drinking water in various States
  7. Special assistance of ₹100 crore each has also been provided to West Bengal and Rajasthan, which are the most affected States due to fluorides and arsenic and the government is working towards removing them
  8. As there are pockets in some other States as well, a special scheme of ₹25,000 crore has been evolved, of which ₹1,250 has been earmarked for this year and ₹760 crore already released to States to ensure that clean drinking water is provided to the people
  9. Small improvements like installation of 9,113 clean drinking water stations to provide drinkable water in different parts of the country and provision of 1,000 litres of RO water each day in one lakh schools have been undertaken and a sum of ₹20,000 crore has been spent on this

[pib] Know about Dam Safety Capacity Building

Context:

  1. Central Water Commission (CWC) under the Ministry of Water Resources River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation signed two separate MoUs with IIT Madras and IIS Bengaluru
  2. This will help them for the procurement of specified equipment and software for enhancing their capability to support dam rehabilitation efforts of CWC

Agencies involved:

  1. The Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has taken on board selected premier academic and research institutes, for capacity building in the areas of dam safety through World Bank assisted Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP)

DRIP:

  1. The scope includes strengthening the testing laboratories, enhancing analytical capabilities, exposure visits to best global institutions and on ground exposure to dam safety concerns to the faculty of these institutions
  2. DRIP is assisting rehabilitation of 250 dams in seven States which are experiencing different levels of distress (Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Jharkhand)
  3. Owners of these dams require technical support for the investigation of site conditions and supporting rehabilitation efforts
  4. The Government of India has decided to enhance the capability of select premier institutes in dam safety areas so that they, in turn, carry out field investigations at dam sites and provide training and consulting services to assist the dam owners in their dam rehabilitation efforts

Water resources ministry becomes nodal agency to implement PMKSY

  1. The Union water resources ministry will once again become the nodal ministry for implementing the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY)
  2. It was initially the nodal department for implementing the programme, but the responsibility was later shifted to agriculture department
  3. However, as most big projects and dams are executed under the ministry of water resources, PMKSY has once again gone back to the ministry

Union Cabinet clears National Hydrology Project

  1. News: Union cabinet has given its approval for Implementation of the National Hydrology Project
  2. Purpose: It is intended for setting up of a system for timely and reliable water resources data acquisition, storage, collation and management
  3. It will help in gathering Hydro-meteorological data which will be stored and analysed on a real time basis
  4. The data can be seamlessly accessed by any user at the State/District/village level
  5. Coverage: The project envisages to cover the entire country as the earlier hydrology projects covered only 13 States

Noyyal restoration begins

  1. News: Launch of Noyyalai Nokki project to restore Noyyal River and its tributaries
  2. Context: Stakeholders in Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode and Karur Districts will jointly take efforts to restore the river
  3. Restoration project includes: Installation of decentralised sewage treatment plants, developing parks where space is available
  4. Project will be implemented on divide-distribute-develop model by forming committees for every 500 metres of river
  5. Nodal Organisation: Norfed (Noyyal River Restoration Federation)
  6. About Noyyal River: Rises from the Vellingiri hills in Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu
  7. Passes through Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Karur to join the Cauvery at Noyyal village (total of 160 km)
