    Is Article 32 applicable to foreigner(if their right 14 & 20 to 28 violate???

    • Profile photo of Pranav Pranav @pranavce15

15,16,19,29 and 30 are available only to citizens not foreigners.
Other fundamental rights (including 32) are given to non-citizens as well.
In such a case that any of those rights are violated, the remedy can be had by going to SC or HC

    Hi Root,

would CD be providing feedback to answers posted for the Questions Tab?

    Thanks

    • Profile photo of Root Root @root

Not on the questions tab Pranav. Atleast not for now. Would be great if you guys toss them among yourselves.

We will be starting with a daily curated list of questions for all 4 GS papers and provide modal answers to one of them while you guys interact on all of them.

Taking time in structuring the initiative. Give us a few days.

  • Profile photo of Siddhartha Singh Siddhartha Singh @siddharthasingh

Please anyone clear my doubt. I found two different causes of formation of Wular lake, Viz. tectonic activity and Ox-bow lake of Jhelum river. Which one is the real reason? Also, if possible, tell me about few other such Indian lakes which are special due to their formation process like Ox-bow, tectonic, meteorite impact etc.

    • Profile photo of tahir fazal tahir fazal @tahirfazal3

Tectonic activity is the reason but Jhelum is also the only river which is known to form Meanders in J&K. Difficult to digest but its true, so therefore Wular is an oxbow lake formed because of meandering of Jhelum.

    • Profile photo of Bruce Wayne Bruce Wayne @bruce-wayne

      It cannot be oxbow-
1-River is more or less in young stage,so can we can see a narrow baramula gorge after the southern bend

2-Region is montaneous, very rare for an oxbow lake.

3-Region is highly tectonic(need not to explain this)

So I think lake is formed tectonically.

But there is another explanation in where its says the base level of river rises, making it bend sharply, now this could be a contributing factor or not,I dont know.:P

    • Profile photo of Siddhartha Singh Siddhartha Singh @siddharthasingh

Thanks. Actually i was thinking that tectonic activity could have formed the basin of lake and then jhelum river filled the water in it. According to NCERT book tectonic activity is responsible and i have checked wiki which quotes that Jhelum river provided water for it. So what i’m asking is what i should mark as correct option if both tectonic activity and jhelum lake is given?

    • Profile photo of Bruce Wayne Bruce Wayne @bruce-wayne

      Simran gave the better answer!

    • Profile photo of Simran Bains Simran Bains @simranbains

For now, just remember that Wular lake is formed due to tectonic activity. That’s all.

    • Profile photo of Jayansh Singh Jayansh Singh @jayanshsingh22

      25. Moong Dal and Copra (dried kernel of coconut) have one of the highest MSPs. Read this article – http://vikaspedia.in/agriculture/market-information/minimum-support-price

    • Profile photo of Siddhartha Singh Siddhartha Singh @siddharthasingh

Ok, But Is not it Fair and remunerative price for sugarcane? MSP = Fair & remunerative price?

    • Profile photo of Jayansh Singh Jayansh Singh @jayanshsingh22

FRP is MSP for sugarcane (pricing for sugarcane is as per the Sugarcane (Control) Order, 1966 under the provisions of Essential Commodities Act, 1955. MSP is fixed and paid by the Union Govt whereas FRP is fixed by the Union Govt but is paid by sugar mills to sugarcane farmers. Also, there’s a State Administered Price (SAP) fixed for sugarcane by the State Govt which is usually higher than FRP.

Prior to 2009-10 sugar season, union govt fixed Statutory Minimum Price (SMP) for sugarcane, wherein farmers were to share 50-50 profit of sugar mills. This scheme of things was replaced after Sugarcane (Control) Order, 1966 got amended in 2009 and FRP was introduced. Sugarcane farmers now are not dependent on mills’ profits for reimbursement.

    • Profile photo of Pranav Pranav @pranavce15

Please also note that there is
“Price Support Scheme (PSS)” for Oil seeds and Pulses The Department of Agriculture and Cooperation implements the Price Support Scheme for Oil Seeds and Pulses through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED). NAFED is the nodal procurement agency for Oilseeds and pulses, apart from the Cotton Corporation of India. So, when the prices of oilseeds, pulses and cotton fall below MSP, NAFED purchases them from the farmers

    Respected Sir,

i have some apprehensions regarding your magazine.
I feel ki everything going on civils daily website is not added into it.
Like today you came up with a article under CD EXPLAINS related to syria.
I doubt ki articles like this and many more will not make into the final edition of magazine which is kind of discouraging.kindly do ensure ki articles under B2B and CD EXPLAINS are added without any omission.
Also i would like to express my views ki your analysis, content is very good and helps in understanding complex issues easily.
But at the same time i feel ki the website is very haphazard. It took me many days to find out which thing lies where!!! Kindly do simplify it by taking a cue from other websites.

    please do assuage my fears.

    Thanks and Regards

    • Profile photo of Root Root @root

      Arpit,

      1. The magazine has all the newscards + selected CD explains/ other long form articles
      2. On the website’s alignment, we have been working tirelessly to fix all the relevant thing at one place. That is the reason why you will see a “Story = News + Explains articles”.

If you are referring to this story – http://www.civilsdaily.com/story/the-crisis-in-the-middle-east/ then shifting the syrian infographic has been a part and parcel of the same drill.

Read all the stories properly – we will be migrating the explainers into them and they will keep re-surfacing again and again as news develops.

Hope this clears some doubts. If you have great sample of magazines who have done well in representing content – go ahead and share the links here.

      Hi Shilpa,

The Magazine covers all the newscards + some of the choicest long form explainer articles. Not everything written by everyone gets to go to the magazine because of the constraints of space and $$.

But to ease your discovery of articles – we created something called as collections which helps us group similar articles and consolidate them better.

Dost basically it’s difficult to lay optic fiber cable from so called mainland India to northeast (just look at the map). B’desh alreeady has international bandwidth cable at cox bazar. B’desh version of BSNL has extended that cable to border at Akhura (near agartala). From there on, BSNL will take over and supply broadband connectivity to Northeast.
India is exporting electricity to B’desh. This enhances mutual cooperation, interdependence and goodwill among members. Good for everyone.

In 8th NCERT of polity, universal adult franchise entails everyone to vote .Alsoevery citizen can contest elections(pg. 13) . But normally , everywhere I read it only says about everyone being allowed to vote. Is the NCERT factually wrong out here by stating that all citizens being allowed to contest in election is also part of universal adult franchise?

    • Profile photo of Anurag Dixit Anurag Dixit @anurag-dixit

      Hello,
Franchise itself means voting, universal means everyone and we all are adult here..:P
Meaning everyone above 18yrs has the right to vote and particpate election.

Right to contest election all together a different concept and its subject to disqualification specified by national laws.

Though both of them works on the same principle of equality and non discrimination,in my opinion the crux of both are different, but guiding principle is same.

      Baki Guruji(Dr.V) bataenge..:)

Although Judicial Activism as such doesn’t have a clear definition, but it implies enhanced role of judiciary in government functioning,so as to implement rule of law- for the establishment of functional democracy.
As legislature and executive does not function on the basis of separation of power, rather there is fusion of power, there are chances of ill will hurting public interest. Here’Judicial activism’plays role.
Here it says that, judicial activism, which is a necessary tool for the functioning of democracy should not merely be an interpretor or advisor, but empowered with stringent power so as to punish the disdaining or disrespectul behavior of a body or individual.

      Anurag –

Magazine = Newscards (on app) + Explainers (CD Explains) – It is amazing for a wholesome revision.

News is comprehensively covered – we remove the noise out of each news piece and give you the best of the rest.

The app only contains newscards, stories and blogs. Forum and questions are not updated on the app as of now.

    Hello CD !

It’s been great you are delivering immense support for all the aspirants who are driving to mussorie . I just completed my graduation and planned to start my journey to IAS . I have no clear idea where to start – Where to end . What to read and what not . But from my limited understanding and Conversation with few friends and seminars i have attended at some IAS coaching centers at Chennai – I summarised few points

    1. You have to read hindu daily – But next Question Poped me is – How to read Hindu – It’s around 25 pages – Is it required to Read everything on hindu for prelims ?

I want CD – Roots to explain this – With the experts – and make out Standing strategy – How to read hindu – Which would be helpful for New aspirants

    2. Please guide me – What books to choose for prelims (paper 1 & Paper 2 ) ? There is a lot mentioned on internet . I am confused somewhere they mentioned you have to read this and that

    3. Preparation for mains – For all papers except Commerce ( Optional ) – How do i go about it ?
Slef study is enough ? Which requires Coaching from reputed institutions at delhi –

Please help in this regards – Any Specific strategy and books mentioned by CD

Thank you very much – CD Team for their sleepless job !

    • Profile photo of Focus Ias Focus Ias @focusias

Venkat, read CD’s daily summaries of news from the news tab or app. Then read hindu – you will have a better understanding of newspaper and it will take sometime…

Books and mains – have you not joined any coaching?

NO BUDDY ! I WOULD LIKE TO SELF PREPARATION . DONT KNOW HOW IT WILL GO .

    hi

In the app, beside the topic name, it says 3 more #back2backbasics etc…..what does it mean? how to check the topics of same issue but from previous date? Is it possible in the app?

    • Profile photo of Root Root @root

#back2basics = a static definition of a term which was in news in the newscards of the day

3 more or 4 more etc – this means that this newscard connects back to 3 more previous newscards and you can see them while you are reading that card. Go to the bottom and click on the story strip on the flashcard. That will take you to the link which connects all the cards previously filed.

most of time,i face this word but bit confused about its exact meaning…. ye capacity building kaun si bird hai yaar…. i knw it may b silly but plzz show me the way… explain it??

    • Profile photo of Dr V Dr V @dr-v

Rini is absolutely right. It is exactly as the name implies building capacity to do something. For instance if municipalities are to implement smart city mission, they must have knowledge of financial aspects, must have enough advisers, funds etc. You deliver all this, you build capacity of municipalities to deliver the programme.
Just as education builds your capacity to be successful in life or computer science engineering builds capacity to code and design websites

    • Profile photo of Rini Sen Rini Sen @rini

Capacity building focuses on understanding the obstacles that inhibit people, governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations from realizing their development goals – “definition by wiki.”

Think of it as a way of inventory building so that some policy in future will have no obstacles to fulfil its promise…

Yes, countries who used US funding in the right way moved forward – Japan, South Korea, Turkey are few examples. On the other hand you have countries like Pakistan who couldnt do well.

    Hey Root,

When we open the home page, the message that appears in case of a new comment reads something like this ” This topic contains 632 replies, has 230 voices, and was last updated by Dr. V 2 days, 23 hours ago.”
After that I have to scroll down to find out the story on which he commented match it with time to be sure that this is the latest comment.
Instead is it possible that this notification reads something like this “…..Dr. V commented on …story name…..2 hours ago”. Here just by clicking on story I can move to that page.

    Possible?

In peninsular India, Godavari has the largest drainage basin, which river has the highest one?

    • Profile photo of Kunal Grover Kunal Grover @kunal-grover

How do you differentiate? In both cases you meant area. Is not it?

    • Profile photo of Srikant Srikant @srikant

It differs in meaning. Largest means the terrain it covers while highest means altitude above sea level. Isn’t that?

    • Profile photo of Kunal Grover Kunal Grover @kunal-grover

I am still sceptical. Then you should find out the height of place of origin of major rivers. But what about one random not so famous tributary which might be even higher?

    • Profile photo of Srikant Srikant @srikant

Kunal, The question is about a drainage basin and not about a river or tributary. Drainage basin consists of a complete system of rivers & tributaries flowing in a particular area.

    • Profile photo of Kunal Grover Kunal Grover @kunal-grover

Thanks for reinforcing my understanding of drainage basin. But all I am saying is, is not it possible that there is one random small river with no tributaries which does not find mention in our standard books. Nonetheless do let me know if you find an answer to it.

Right to property was a fundamental right under art 31 which was subsequently removed from the list of fundamental rights by 44th CAA . It was then placed under art 300A . That’s how right to property be made a constitutional right, much more than legal right .
We have discussed the position of right to property in our series landmark judgments . U can find more here http://www.civilsdaily.com/blog/landmark-judgements-that-transformed-india/

The rights conferred by law are legal rights. Of these which are essential for a dignified life and concern the most basic needs for that become fundamental rights.

    Hi Vikas,

We have discontinued the FREE monthly pdfs and are releasing more enriched monthly newsletters. This would be a PAID subscription and the Edition #0 has been released for FREE here – http://www.civilsdaily.com/support-civilsdaily-heres-why/

CD is not becoming less user friendly. We have been most active in accommodating user concerns and updating our platform to help everyone learn better.

As to the magazine releases of 2015, they will be repackaged and presented for SALE at a later date.

  • Profile photo of vikas sheokand vikas sheokand @vikas-sheokand

The Main exam is what matters the most. It’s worth 1750 out of the 2025 marks counted for merit! You should choose your sources after seeing both the Prelims and Mains papers. The sources I’ve mentioned are primarily from Prelims perspective.

Science – NCERTs class 6th to 8th or till 10th +/or any other source.

    Geography – NCERTs class 11th & 12th + G. C. Leong + Atlas(very imp).

@priyanka ..ncert and news paper reading is very essential for the entire journey of civil service. but we don’t need anything with anxiety. read ncert books 1 st times with the mind of a school students. .then second times with the mind of graduate and 3 times with the mind of IAS OFFICER. but read a news paper with all levels at time. quality and quantity in reading is the keypad of our internal motivation. ..but writing in your own words is external motivation.

Keep an eye on the previous years’ papers of the Prelims exam. Doing that would help you understand what all topics hold more significance from the exam point of view and also the way questions are framed by the UPSC. Not all NCERTs are to be read in detail. For ancient history part, you can read the old NCERT class 11th book by R S Sharma. For polity part, you can simply read Laxmikanth’s Polity book and not bother about any other source as far as Prelims is concerned. Make sure to study and revise it properly before the exam. Solve MCQs from the topics you’ve already covered. Accuracy of solving questions in the exam hall is directly proportional to the study investment made in terms of the number of revisions and the amount of practice. Plan your studies smartly. All the best!

    Second doubt –

The green revolution was a package technology because it comprising material components of improved high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of two staple cereals (rice and wheat), irrigation or controlled water supply and improved moisture utilization, fertilizers and pesticides and associated management skills. The utilization of this technology package on suitable land in suitable socio-economic enabling environments resulted in greatly increased yields and incomes for many farmers in Asia (in India too) and in some developing countries.
That’s why it is known as complete technological package which fulfils need for green revolution!!

  • Profile photo of Arun Muradnar Arun Muradnar @arunmuradnar65

    Clearing First doubt –

The Supreme Court is vested with the right to punish those guilty of contempt of Court under Article 129 read with Article 142 of the Constitution of India. The power to punish contemners is also vested with the High Courts under Article 215 of the Constitution and the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971 also governs the punishments given by the High Court. This act in no way controls the jurisdiction of the Apex Court.
You can refer, 1998 Case of Supreme Court Bar Association v. Union of India –
The Court punished Shri Mishra by suspending him thus the petition arose in the 1998 case.
Also further refer to Case of Brahma prasad v. State of Uttar Pradesh (1953).

For any developing country inflation and GDP are like “choli daaman ka sath”. with high GDP rate people spend more and inflation increases ! but for developed and poor countries inflation is less related to GDP ! for example in US , bcz of less GDP growth inflation decreases but on other side in Zimbabwe bcz of less GDP growth inflation increased exponentially ! ( i never read this anywhere ,its just my analysis so plz anyone correct me if i am wrong)

This is broadly what a Swiss challenge is – Any person with credentials can submit a development proposal to the government. That proposal will be made online and a second person can give suggestions to improve and beat that proposal.

Challenges = Lack of transparency and competition while dealing with unsolicited proposals – who is bringing the bid and with what intention. It might lead to crony capitalism (favouritism etc) and in areas where sarkar has less understanding of the actual risks involved etc etc. they may end up giving a project to this volunteer because we did not bother to go with a traditional competitive bidding.

Reading reading and reading! First develop your reading skills. 🙂 and when we read something we usually get a few words that are completely new to us. Write them somewhere, find its meaning and apply those words in one or two sentences of you own. After a few hours, try and recall the word. With time, your vocab will increase. 🙂

    Here’s what happens –

Not just this year, every year the paper weighs towards current. And it basically means two things:

    1. Cover every topic.

    2. While reading current connect it to the syllabus topic it is related to.

How should i go about it then?

  • Profile photo of Amit Bhardwaj Amit Bhardwaj @amit-bhardwaj1

Priyanka, there is only one approach to UPSC and that goes as under :

    1. There is no ‘important’ or ‘unimportant’ topic. That thing has been obfuscated by the paper setters.

    2. There is no trend. They are trend setters.

    3. Luckily for now, quite a few questions are current based even if from so-called static areas.

No Mohit, refreshment is not necessary. It is a must. Mind has unfathomable capabilities but the mind of lesser mortals like us does needs rest. When you cant concentrate, don’t force your mind to do it. You can’t win in this battle. Mind will wander however hard you may try to tame it. It is but natural. Don’t let the preparation burn you out. Go out with friends. Watch a movie. It is just fine. Just make a schedule to study and follow it with a modicum of in-built flexibility. Do not worry about what you could not do as it will cloud what you can still do. Ok?

I personally wrote mails to you guys 4 times and every time I am seeing teh same response that it would be released later but its not on priority list .The reason is unknown to me. I agree that android users are more in number than windows users, but that doesn’t mean that any one is better ,That will be decided by the UPSC result .
I again request you guys to come up with Windows app. That will be real gift to the community . Hope my sincere request will be considered this time.

    Hi Syed,

It is very subjective as to what constitutes “current affairs”. But following current affairs from about a year before PT is good enough.
In the year 2013, they asked a question on a policy that was in news in 2009-10. May be some related news appeared in 2013. But we cannot really go that back in the annals of current affairs. One year is just fine.

  • Profile photo of Amit Bhardwaj Amit Bhardwaj @amit-bhardwaj1

    Hello Mishra Ji,

For economics, complete the NCERTs first to clear the basics. Purge the data as most of it might be obsolete, just focus on the concept. Then as you read daily newspaper, jot down the economic terms that regularly appear in the paper and find out their meaning. For example, when you read “capital gains” find out its exact meaning. Heavy duty stuff, like Eco Survey et al only after we are done with basics and still left with time!

Luckily, the economics questions in PT and Mains have largely been current news driven.

You should know your strength and weaknesses in order to practice for answers or say writing practice. Work hardly on weaknesses first!
There are lot of instructions and guidebooks available in market for ans writing. But, only following books would not accomplished our purpose, so just atleast try to make out Gist of editorials or opinion/articles from Hindu or Express and write it point wise, and try to make questions from this gists daily. Because, this UPSC’s changing trend needs a daily dive of hindu and express op-eds. Keep syllabus copy with u always, for relevance. So, rigorous comprehensive reading with writing practice is the need of hour!

You can have some tips from here –

    Hi Yogesh,

Yogesh it may sound philosophical but the best and only place to improve your writing skills is your study table.

As for some online site, if you type on it, it shall not be of much consequence because in the actual exam you have to write, and if you are looking for suggestions on writing then we are all here providing you just that through our various blogs.

Look, I had replied to a candidate here for writing skills that for someone who wants to get initiated into writing, reading is a must. So read an editorial, put it aside and then try to summarize it in your words, for vocab. our old friend Hindu is enough but make sure you internalize these words and use them often so they naturally flow when you read or write.

Just push your boundaries a little, write something, you will see a change only gradually. Many of us keep waiting for a magic bullet for effective writing. Frankly, there is none or that is what I believe.

We might work on pdf uplaods by candidates and suggesting changes on writing style but no commitment on it as yet.

    Section B :-

9). A private company is known for its efficiency, transparency and employee welfare. The company though owned by a private individual has a cooperative character where employees feel a sense of ownership. The company employs nearly 700 personnel and they have voluntarily decided not to form union.

One day suddenly in the morning, about 40 men belonging to political party gate crashed into the factory demanding jobs in the factory. They threatened the management and employees, and also used foul language. The employees feel demoralized. It was clear that those people who gate crashed wanted to be on the payroll of the company as well as continue as the volunteers/members of the party.

The company maintains high standards in integrity and does not extend favours to civil administration that also includes law enforcement agency. Such incident occur in public sector also. (20 Marks) (250 Words)

    (a) Assume you are the CEO of the company. What would you do to diffuse the volatile situation on the date of gate crashing with the violent mob sitting inside the company premises?

    (b) What can be the long term solution to the issue discussed in the case?

    (c) Every solution/action that you suggest will have a negative and a positive impact on you as (CEO), the employees and the performance of the employees. Analyse the consequences of each of your suggested actions.

    10) You are the Sarpanch of a Panchayat. There is a primary school run by the government in your area. Midday meals are provided to children attending the school. The headmaster has now appointed a new cook in the school to prepare the meals. However, when it is found that cook is from Dalit community, almost half of the children belonging to higher castes are not allowed to take meals by their parents. Consequently the attendance in the schools falls sharply. This could result in the possibility of discontinuation of midday meal scheme, thereafter of teaching staff and subsequent closing down the school. (20 Marks) (250 Words)

    (a) Discuss some feasible strategies to overcome the conflict and to create right ambiance.

    (b) What should be the responsibilities of different social segments and agencies to create positive social ambiance for accepting such changes?

11)One of the scientists working in the R&D laboratory of a major pharmaceutical company discovers that one of the company’s bestselling veterinary drugs has the potential to cure a currently incurable liver disease which is prevalent in tribal areas. However, developing a variant of the drug suitable for human being entailed a lot of research and development having a huge expenditure to the extent of Rs. 50 crores. It was unlikely that company would recover the cost as the disease was rampant only in poverty stricken areas having very little market otherwise.

If you were the CEO, then (20 Marks) (250 Words)

    (a) Identify the various actions that you could take

    (b) Evaluate the pros and cons of each of your actions

    12) There is a disaster prone state having frequent landslides, forest fires, cloudbursts, flash floods and earthquakes, etc. Some of these are seasonal and often unpredictable. The magnitude of the disaster is always unanticipated. During one of the seasons a cloudburst caused a devastating floods and landslides leading to high casualties. There was major damage to infrastructure like roads, bridges and power generating units. This led to more than 100000 pilgrims, tourist and other locals trapped across different routes and locations. The people trapped in your area of responsibility includes senior citizens, patients in hospitals, women and children, hiker, tourist, ruling parties, regional presidents along with his family, additional chief secretary of the neighboring state and prisoners in jail.

    13) You are heading a district administration in a particular department. Your senior officer calls you from the State Headquarters and tells you that a plot in Rampur village is to have a building constructed on it for a school. A visit is scheduled during which he will visit the site along with the chief engineer and the senior architect. He wants you to check out all the papers relating to it and ensure that the visit is properly arranged. You examine the file which relates to the period before you joined the department. The land was acquired for the local panchayat at a nominal cost and the papers showed that clearance certificates are available for the two of the three authorities who have to certify the site’s suitability. There is no certification by the architect available on file. You decide to visit Rampur to ensure that all is in the order as stated on file. When you visit Rampur, you find that the plot under reference is a part of Thakurgarh fort and that the walls, ramparts, etc., are running across it. The fort is well away from the main village, therefore a school here will be a serious inconvenience for the children. However, the area near the village has potential to expand into a larger residential area. The development charges on the existing plot, at the fort, will be very high and question of heritage site has not been addressed. (ii) You can seek his advice in writing or on phone.

(iii) You can consult your predecessor/ colleagues, etc, and then decide what to do.

(iv) You can find out if any alternate plot can be got in exchange and then send a comprehensive written report.

Can you suggest any other option with proper justifications?

    14) You are recently posted as district development officer of a district. Shortly thereafter you found that there is considerable tension in the rural areas of your district on the issue of sending girls to schools.

The elders of the village feel that many problems have come up because girls are being educated and they are stepping out of the safe environment of the household. They are the view that the girls should be quickly married off with minimum education. The girls are also competing for jobs after education, which have traditionally remained in boys’ exclusive domain, adding to unemployment amongst male population.

The younger generation feels that in the present era, girls should have equal opportunities for education and employment, and other means of livelihood. The entire locality is divided between sexes in both generations. You come to know that in Panchayat or in other local bodies or even in busy crosswords, the issue is being acrimoniously debated.

One day you are informed that an unpleasant incident has taken place. Some girls were molested, when they were en route to schools. The incident led to clashes between several groups and a law and order problem has arisen. The elder after heated discussion have taken a joint decision not to allow girls to go to school and to socially boycott all such families, which do not follow their dictate. (250 words) (25 Marks)

    1. Naveen we always prepare for mains first and then Prelims and not the other way round. Without discounting the importance of Prelims, it can still be said that it is just a qualifying stage and does not warrant exclusive study for 7-8 months. As for your question regarding material, we had published a list of books for Prelims which should just suffice to clear Prelims.

    2. It is difficult to state whether you should read a book before or after prelims. In any case most candidates shall prefer to read eco survey before prelims for there might be some questions in Prelims. Now when you read eco survey or arc or other government reports (which appears overkill to me) just focus on the boxes in the chapters, read the summary of the chapter and any thing which has been highlight. There is just no time to read them word by word and impossible to remember even if we dare to read them word by word.

    3. The reason why you don’t understand the polity and eco issues is because you have just started and it shall take time for you to get used to the stories as they develop and unfold. Don’t make History a scapegoat or it might take an exception. to it!

    4. If you ask me whether you can prepare for mains after Prelims my answer shall be an emphatic NO. Because you have hardly three months between mains and Prelims. One of these months is frittered away by many candidates thinking about whether they shall clear Prelims or not So basically you are left with just two months and if you are still covering syllabus post-Prelims, when shall you revise, when shall you update information from newspapers, when shall you cover the unfolding stories of current, when shall you practice answer writing?

Hope I could answer your queries. Feel free to revert.

    Regards

Revising at least twice is true of any book. That you should not read anything you don’t intend to revise is cardinal principle of this exam. It may appear time consuming at face value but every one of us knows that in UPSC there is only one way and that is the long way. Why it is all the more important with NCERTs is that UPSC shall ask many questions from them and, if I may call it so, getting a question from NCERT wrong is a cardinal sin in an exam where a fraction of a mark can keep you out of the list od selected candidates.

I believe you reading from old NCERTs. And if that is the case then yes every line in it is factual and note making from it shall indeed be a photocopy. Now try this. Read it. Mug it up. Come back to it after a week or so and then again after few days. After that you shall know most of the facts by heart as you would have already revised it twice. Even after this if there is something that you cannot remember, which is unlikely, make a note of it.
    Regards.

Sir/Madam,Iam reading NCERT history books.I was said to prepare notes after completion of reading a topic. actually I know nothing about history, I am feeling every point in it is important and when I am making notes Iam writing everything (Iam writing no. of pages after completing a topic) and when I finished the notes,it is appearing as Iam making a new book equivalent to the original one and also it is consuming a lot of time. I request you to tell me how to prepare notes for history which should be easy to write and also to revise.I request you if possible give me an example on a topic.

Look for the tab on story for that. All newscards will eventually find their way in one of the developing stories.

  • Profile photo of Root Root @root

    Amit,

The Yellow Icon = Title of the story under which the daily newscards connect. The story will help you get the context on the larger news and the backstory for developments.

The Red Icon = Division of syllabus wrt UPSC’s demand. We have attempted to branch out the broader categories – Polity, Economics into sub categories for a better classification.

    Hi Mohit,

Let me try to answer your question.

    1. What is needed for effective writing is effective reading. Try this. Read an editorial, then keep it aside and write its summary. Then read the editorial again to see that you have not missed out on any important point. If not, you are already half way through effective writing.

    2. Now we come to good vocab part. One thing that I have noticed in the candidates is that most of them have good command over vocab i.e. when it comes to read those words in an article they shall be at ease and would understand their meaning but when it comes to speaking or using them in their own writing they shall invariable use their “second-rung” synonyms. The reason is simple, that we mug up words, we mug up their meanings but we don’t use them frequently in our conversation and writings and therefore they remain only fleetingly with us. So get into this habit of using them in your daily conversation. It shall help in interview as well.

    3. The words that you should master are not the toughest ones in the English dictionary but the ones that frequently appear in newspapers. Say ‘insinuate’ or ‘sycophants’. I will also share a little secret with you. If you are looking for new words, do read the letters to the editor column in the Hindu. You shall always find 2-3 good words there as most of them are written by older people who have been the Hindu fans all their lives and naturally have great vocab.

    Regards

    Mohit,

If you want data on census 2011, you can just google it and you will get the official website. But we shall suggest that you focus on preparing the concepts. The “data” shall be taken care of as you move along your preparation. The census data is not required in itself per se but only when we need it to make comparisons of say literacy rates and decipher some patterns. Such things are taken care of when we read the maps associated with them which give an idea of which states have literacy rates more then 90 percent and so on. Do not bother yourself to much with data collection. If needed we will do it near the Prelims, with the latest data updates.

    Regards

  • Profile photo of Amit Bhardwaj Amit Bhardwaj @amit-bhardwaj1

    Kiran,

A list of books that is as long as shared by you for Prelims is tantamount to overkill. And you have not even mentioned the NCERTs which are the first books we cover when we start preparing for CSE. We have already written a blog on booklist for Prelims, do refer to it.

List all the strategies that you can use for preparation, critically evaluate with suits you the best.
    And go for it 😉

Newspaper reading should compliment your static subjects. Let’s say you read about NJAC debates and you go back in the day to revise the related polity questions. you have mentioned in one of your article that while reading news one should focus on pros and cons and write notes accordingly.. then search in standard books for the related static portion and write notes and then again write you own views on that issue. That is fine but you have also mentioned that newspaper reading should not be more than one hour. So do we need to write static portion and our views at the same time while reading news or it should be after reading whole newspaper. ?

    Raghav,

Government has made it mandatory for domestic fertiliser firms to “neem coat” at least 75 per cent of their urea production. This is because most of the farmers use urea indiscriminately – it being very cheap.

Fertiliser Minister Ananth Kumar had said that with the use of neem coated urea, there will be more yield to the extent of 15-20 per cent and with less use of urea to the extent of 15-20 per cent.

This link should help you – http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/agri-business/neemcoated-urea-mandatory-for-75-of-domestic-production/article7049075.ece

    Hello Team CD!

Thanks for considering my words. Yes, I am already aware of your upcoming monthly magazine. Waiting for it (Obviously!). Hope to see the b2b compilation soon in the CD’s app. Just a constructive opinion, we all know you guys have diluted your days & nights for us by letting no stone unturned in this perennial process. As thousands of aspirants are dependent on you through a virtual faith. So I am sure there must be a monitoring check section keeping an eye on each and every news item pre-post upload, making sure that nothing relevant and important is being left out. (Not doubting your skills and efforts). Why am I saying this? Majorly because while reading newspaper many minute details occur that do play a significant role, specifically in Prelims. So, I hope you agree and understand my concern about this. As it’s essential and beneficial for both the ends. (All in good spirit my pals).

Keep up the great work. Good luck!
Looking forward to your magazine and also b2b in CD’s app.

    Stay blessed and Cheers! 🙂

    Hello Root/Su/Admin,

I over heard that you guys are coming up with a magazine, if I could make a request, please come up with a kindle version of the magazine; if it calls for too much effort from your side, the least you could do is kindly keep the pdf of the magazine in a single column format.
That would make it legible and convenient for a minority of people like me who reads on e-book readers.

I hope that’s not a big-ask and sincerely hope people at civilsdaily are ‘tolerant’, democratic and would be considerate of minority 😉

    Regards,
    SP

We are coming out with a magazine and you will be pleasantly stunned by the amazing quality of its compilation. Wait for a month or so.

  • Profile photo of Root Root @root

    Hi Ravi,

Thanks for the immensely kind words. Mean a lot to the team over here.

Your suggestions makes sense and we will try to improvise on presentation and content discoverability more so that aspirants do not spend time looking for connecting themes.

We are working towards bringing a much much amazing compilation all the month’s activity in a magazine format and you guys should see them coming in the offline stores as well as online place in the coming month.

On Articles & Acts – Sure. We will try to include static through dynamic so that you get to revise everything in a very very convincing way. Our comic strips and explainers are a part of this process.

    Keep reading and suggesting!

    Hello team CD!

Obviously no doubt you guys are doing a fabulous job. I have been following CD since few months and overwhelmed by the efforts, innovation and improvisation have been put in by the team. Generally if aspirants go through any CSE preparation site or app only for reference, and majorly depending on newspaper (Hindu) but you guys have turned around the conventional approach. Congrats and God bless you for that. And after introducing b2b you have taken it to a different level man. Kudos!

I have just a request as well as a suggestion to you regarding the same, please provide the b2b entire compilation on the CD official app as well (Can be added in the category section). And one more thing, as you guys are covering almost every important and relevant topics under b2b section. It would be great if an ‘Articles & Acts’ section or wing could also be integrated in CD based on its occurrence in the daily newapaper.
    That it!
Hope I do sound sane, rational and pragmatic.

    Thanks & Cheers! 🙂

    Guys,

The Prelims corner & Mains writing quizzes have been put on hold for now. We are focusing on creating quality articles for you and creating a lot of them so that you do get a one stop solution for all possible queries.

Keep engaging within the community on stories & CD Hub’s posts. We have an amazing crowd of well informed readers.

  • Profile photo of Root Root @root

    Goutham,

Have you joined any prep course? If not then you should first read blogs by rankers here –

  • Profile photo of Root Root @root

    Yogesh,

CD is focussed on aggregating the best of content and help you make sense of the news. Trust on us when we say that this is all that you need to do on News.

If you want to deep dive further, you can research on some key words or concepts and start the discussion on the theory where all the community members will jump in love to engage.

Look to see more of your efforts here.

  • Profile photo of Rini Sen Rini Sen @rini

    Mohit,

I would suggest that you build your basis first – answer writing can be taken up from Feb onwards. Rankers vouch for point wise answers and not lyrical poems anyway so don’t worry – get your basics, be up to date with current affairs and you would be good…

    Deeksha,

I don’t think it is selectively possible to follow only op-eds. However, they appear within the app with [op-ed snap] as a headline.

    Hi Prem,

iOS plans are a bit in distant future. For now, only android or web.

  • Profile photo of Root Root @root

    Raman –

The website is essentially a compilation of news-stories & explainers. The app is a daily bulletin of whatever is important on that day. Not every flashcard can be a part of a big story (which is evolving from let’s say 2014 and beyond). And hence not every flashcard is connected to a story.

In the app you will find orange tree icon below some of the newscards, they are the ones which are replicated on the web as well.

  • Profile photo of Root Root @root

Thanks for the kind words. Keep coming back and enjoy the journey 🙂

  • Profile photo of Root Root @root

    Mohit,

Most of the aspirants go through the same phase. That’s precisely the reason why we made CD. While we pick up important news on a daily basis, we also summarise important op-eds on the application. You would find them with the [op-ed snap] prefix.

Keep up with our updates and you will increase your chances of remembering most of what’s worth remembering for the exam.

  • Profile photo of Mohit Raj Mohit Raj @mohitraj

  • Profile photo of raman sihag raman sihag @raman-sihag

Hi,I have seen your whole page for the first time today, all the articles read are completely insightful or must for an aspirant or beginner like me and am very fortunate that I have found a right place that was need of an hour for me.Hope You will help with this
I have just done my graduation and started my UPSC prepare right now(16th november 2015) and joined an online foundation course for GS right now
    1.Newspaper Reading
I dont have habit of reading newspaper till now I have hardly ready newspaper except sports page and watched news only on TV
Now being a beginner it seems quite challenging
    Reasons
1.Drought or Famine of interest in Newspaper reading.
2.not the clarity of basics of GS subjects
BUT both of these things are within my reach and can manage them easily especially holistically if got right guidance from you.
I have a doubt that from what time to what time one should be thorough with current affairs for UPSC 2016
please help how to cope and then overcome this issue

Good thought. We are thinking about some way to compile these things and churn out a monthly magazine/ digest of sorts. Would be a paid supplement.

Let’s keep the app simple as it is right now. We are increasing the number of newscards & adding a few initiatives onto it. Back to basics/ some testing modules are in fray.

You will know the answer once you go through the syllabus.Download the 2015 notification and refer the syllabus.Simply for Answer:Yes if you read mains it will cover most of the topics in prelims. For booklist..I found this helpful http://www.clearias.com/books-for-upsc-civil-service-main-exam-preparation/ .Practise More as possible. No use if u only buy.Follow the news from CivilsDaily and stories.Link them all policies.Read everything know it .View toppers interviews..Dig it all.

Tip:But one tip which is very helpful is, make the stories downloadable as of that month. It will mean alot to exams perspective. There will be many stories stuffed, but you may give the download links down in that story specifying the month as you are doing in digest.Sorry to repeat ,it is very very very helpful.

Try doing one sheet and see how much time it consumes Ankur. And how much shall it take to rule about 60-70 sheets that are there in the QCM booklet. Some examiners give you sheet 15 min before exam commences, some 10 and some give just 1 min before the clock strikes. Cannot vouch for it but I wonder if Gaurav ruled his sheets in UPSC.

    Regards

  • Profile photo of Ankur Loonia Ankur Loonia @ankur-loonia

Can one make the UPSC answer sheets ruled by drawing lines using pencil? Is it allowed.?
If yes, do we have enough time to do that, i.e. before commencement of exam?, i.e. do they give answer sheet before the real time as in case of OMR answer sheets.?

Asking, because it brings great improvement in handwriting.
Doubt, because saw such self-ruled sheets in one of the Gaurav Agarwal’s Vision IAS answer sheet.

    2. your infographics are nice which software are you using to create it?

Please provide a separate section in the site for target IAS 2016. 1. We let the issue develop and see if it can have a long term implication before we start putting them up here. Inadvertently, a lot of issues will indeed get covered by CD.

    2. If you still feel that some other important issues are missed – do cover up and let us know.

We would suggest that following CD is enough – you need to take care of the static syllabus as well.

  • Profile photo of praveen kumar praveen kumar @praveen-kumar3

Hello CD, thanks for simplifying the current affairs. I have a doubt that while reading Hindu news paper I feel more important issues which is useful for upsc exam. But when I watch CD I see only some are placed as current affairs. Plz guide me simply following current affairs in CD is enough ?

@Mukul? Has UPSC declared that there shall be a change in pattern? If not, sleep over it.

And now for a moment, let us assume that one fine day UPSC suddenly decides to change the pattern in 2016. So? Should you wait till May 2016 notification to note down the changes and plan your studies accordingly?

The bottom-line is that you should get over these “change in pattern from 2016”, “lowering of age limit”, “reduction in number of attempts” propaganda and focus on preparation..

    Pragya –

Valid question and the short answer is that we are working towards combining CD Hub and Stories together at one page so that you don’t have to worry about missing out any writeup.

Long answer – As of now, categories do not cover the CD Hub Articles. They contain the news stories categorised. We will soon be adding sub categories to these categories and you will have a better idea of where these current affairs fit in.

  • Profile photo of Pragya Tanwar Pragya Tanwar @pragyatanwar

    Hi civilsdaily..
i am tad confused between your titles i.e stories Cd hub and categories.
i want to know that the categories section contains the same as given in Cd hub or its different. and the ” Explains part is only provided under Cd Hub or its even provided category wise..for ex if i want to follow only ” Category section” will i be able to have all the coverage of CD Hub and stories category wise?
Category section is much important as one csn study according to different GS papers..
    Thanks

Yes wani it is necessary. NCERTs are the stepping stones. You may or may not find questions directly picked up from them but nevertheless information gathered from them does helps in eliminating choices in prelims and provides some fodder for mains. We are working on the strategies for every stage of the exam and shall be posted shortly. As for reading speed it is naturally slow when you reading something for the first time and with concentration. It will automatically gain pace over a period of time. As for remembering try to use mnemonics and other tools like association. Happy learning. ?

Yes. You can skip the daily note making but we would still recommend that you buy monthly Frontline to cover the stories in detail again.

Do read the CD Explains and make notes from them because they can come in handy for Mains answer writing and interview prep.

I am a regular reader of CivilsDaily 🙂 Great content on every topics. But I have a question, everyone says that to prepare for civil service you need to read class 6-12 NCERTs first. I have all the books of 6-12 class in soft copies. But the problem is that they are SECURED pdfs, so while reading I can’t highlight the important text. So anyone can help me suggest what should I do? Where can I get PDFs that can be highlighted or any other way to highlight SECURED pdfs??

  • Profile photo of Amar Gupta Amar Gupta @amar-gupta

I’m glad that you are considering the problem of content discoverability.

Speaking personally, I’m new to CD, and thinking of covering current affairs for the last month exclusively from your platform as an experiment. But as a purist who has never left more than a week of Hindu untouched, up until last month- seeing the lack of sync, I’m doubtful that despite my best efforts to cover content from either interfaces, there will be some content left undiscovered, which is discomforting.

While I understand there are separate targets for different interfaces- mobile and web from an enterprise point of view; but from an aspirant’s point of view- its best if there is a coherence. Because it will help generate trust b/w both sets of aspirants using different interfaces in that they both are on the same page (so to speak) as long as they are CD subscribers; and for you to retain them in this amazing community.

    Cheers!

  • Profile photo of Root Root @root

    1. No. Rather it is a subset of the newsfeed on the mobile app. But this page provides a lot of relevance to those seemingly disparate newsfeeds.
    e.g.: http://www.civilsdaily.com/story/sebi-fmc-merger-the-road-ahead/

    2. Nope. Not yet. In fact since you asked, we are thinking of how to solve the problem of content discoverability for you guys. We are tinkering with some ideas on presenting all the newsfeed + explainers + discuss which belong to a single theme in one single layout!

We are putting together the design puzzle to do this in a neat and clean manner!

  • Profile photo of Root Root @root

    Amar,

It’s not a bug per se. Here’s how the newsfeed find their place in CD.

    1. App is for Newscards – but not all of those newscards find a place in our stories since they do not necessarily connect to a continuous theme. Hence, we pick only relevant newscards from our daily app updates and tie them up in the stories.

    2. All the stories are listed separately in the Stories tab. We believe they are major themes and they will keep evolving and we will keep adding newscards relevant to them.

    3. None of the CD HUB articles find their way onto the Android App.

    4. The asteroid article which you found via search is actually a hack. We do not list these newscards on the web but yes they are present somewhere in the website’s domain indeed 🙂

  • Profile photo of Amar Gupta Amar Gupta @amar-gupta

    Edit:

#1: I meant http://www.civilsdaily.com as home page equivalent of feed on mobile app.

#2: Are there ways to find ancillary stuffs posted under the profiles of “CD Discuss” and “CD Explains” on the MOBILE app?

  • Profile photo of Amar Gupta Amar Gupta @amar-gupta

Hi CivilsDaily team, I just wish to point your attention to a bug in your system, or so I think it to be.

I use CD both on my phone and desktop (web browser version), but I notice certain stories find their place on http://www.civilsdaily.com/blog/ (which is the index page I believe).

For example- today, 3rd of October- there’s a story on Asteroid Impact, which appears on the app feed, but not on the index page of the web version. But if I search “Asteroid” on the search bar, I am able to see the “page” for the story (http://www.civilsdaily.com/asteroid-impact-volcanoes-led-mass-extinction-earth/#post-9221)

Can you attest whether this is a synchronization issue?

    1. Keep your focus only on 11th, 12th for most of NCERTs
    2. These are all the NCERTs that you will need. You don’t have to go thru the Science ones because that goes against the cost/ benefit analysis anyway.
