Automation to hit textile sector

  1. Context: A joint study conducted by industry body Texprocil and EY
  2. News: Textile and apparel industry is likely to create only 29 lakh jobs compared to the government’s target of 1 crore new jobs
  3. This is despite the sector’s growth in market size by 40% in the next 5 years
  4. The reduced job opportunities are due to technological advancement leading to increased efficiency
  5. The spinning, autoconers and auto-splicers divisions have replaced 20 workers by 2 on average
  6. As per a World Bank report, 69% of the jobs in India are at a higher risk of being replaced by automation
