[op-ed snap] Social Discrimination alive in Tumakuru

  1. Village barber shops denies haircuts for Dalits, temple festivities are out-of-bounds for Dalit families.
  2. Discrimination is deep-rooted in psyche, especially in rural settings in particular.
  3. Has the political justice brought through affirmative action has failed to overcome social injustice?
  4. The policy of affirmative action has yielded a high degree of participation and representation of Dalits in politics and in governance.
  5. But, a recent Hindu report highlights clear diversity deficit in leadership of major political parties, with dalits severely under-represented.
  6. Without progressive social consciousness permeating society at large, constitutionalism, state actions and political equations simply do not suffice to achieve social justice.
