Testing Tuesday : High Five With Tikdam – 6

 Dr V
  • Hello everyone,

We have been hammering on importance of logical thinking and art of tikdam along with sound preparation as essential ingredients of recipe to clear prelims examination for quite some time now. The flagship prelims test series is based on the same principles so is our prelims daily initiative.

We started high five with tikdam to reinforce the importance of logical thinking and to get you into the habit of applying your mind while solving questions. In the first installment, there were five tough questions from 2016 paper which could be solved by tikdam.Individually none of you could get all five right but collectively you got all five right using tikdam.  In the 2nd installment, questions were easy to moderate and many more of you got answers right. In the 3rd installment, questions were a bit tricky and many of you failed to read the entire question with all the options carefully to arrive ta the write answer.

How to practice – join the test series for more practice (600 tikdams) and one on one interaction with mentors (most important to take your thought process in right direction). It will help you get better in answering prelims questions and scoring 120 plus marks in CSE Prelims 2018.

Further, we will be posting five questions (apart from prelims daily) from previous years papers on every Tuesday   9 a.m  (Testing Tuesday) and Thursday 9 p.m.(Testing Thursday)  to make you practice questions asked in exam so that you can yourself the judge of efficacy of tikdam.

Here are high five questions from prelims 2011 (Easy ones) which you can solve with your knowledge, logical thinking and tikdam.

    1. In the Union Budget 2011-12, a full exemption from the basic customs duty was extended to the
bio-based asphalt (bioasphalt). What is the importance of this material?
      1. Unlike traditional asphalt, bio-asphalt is not based on fossil fuels.
      2. Bioasphalt can be made from non-renewable resources.
      3. Bioasphalt can be made from organic waste materials.
      4. It is eco-friendly to use bioasphalt for surfacing of the roads.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
      a) 1, 2 and 3 only
      b) 1, 3 and 4 only
      c) 2 and 4 only
      d) 1, 2, 3 and 4

    2. Consider the following:
    1. Carbon dioxide
    2. Oxides of Nitrogen
    3. Oxides of Sulphur
Which of the above is/are the emission/emissions from coal combustion at thermal power
    a) 1 only
    b) 2 and 3 only
    c) 1 and 3 only
    d) 1, 2 and 3

    3. India has experienced persistent and high food inflation in the recent past. What could be the
    1. Due to a gradual switchover to the cultivation of commercial crops, the area under the
cultivation of food grains has steadily decreased in the last five years by about 30%.
    2. As a consequence of increasing incomes, the consumption patterns of the people have
    undergone a significant change.
    3. The food supply chain has structural constraints. Which of the statements given above are
    a) 1 and 2 only
    b) 2 and 3 only
    c) 1 and 3 only
    d) 1, 2 and 3

    4. Consider the following:
    1. Photosynthesis
    2. Respiration
    3. Decay of organic matter
    4. Volcanic action
Which of the above add carbon dioxide to the carbon cycle on Earth?
    a) 1 and 4 only
    b) 2 and 3 only
    c) 2, 3 and 4 only
    d) 1, 2, 3 and 4

    5. With reference to micro-irrigation, which of the following statements is/are correct?
    1. Fertilizer/nutrient loss can be reduced.
    2. It is the only means of irrigation in dry land farming.
    3. In some areas of farming, receding of ground water table can be checked.
Select the correct answer using the codes given below:
    a) 1 only
    b) 2 and 3 only
    c) 1 and 3 only
    d) 1, 2 and 3

Most of you did exceedingly well.
    1. Bio and non renewable sort of contradict each other and if you eliminate this statement, only option is left
    2. Thermal power plant emission, similar q we did in tikdam last time, what do you get on burning coal. CO2 obviously one gas, plus impurities of Sulfur, nitrogen. all correct
    3. 30% is very drastic reduction, there is no deficiency of food grais as such, eliminate 1, only one option is lefet
    4. Respiration we all do, take oxygen, release co2 , so 2 would definitely be there. Plants utilize Co2 in Photosynthesis process, so 1 would definitely not be there. Volcanic action would release many gases, CO2 one amng the,. You get the answer
    5. 2 has only word, as if there were no means of irrigation in drylands before advent of this technology. So 2 is incorrect. 3 is correct as it more water efficient technology plus statement is so mild, in some areas, can be checked – not a forceful exaggerated statement

  •  Aditya Prakash @adi1357911

    1) B renewable hai
    2) B co2 is not emission
    3) B 1st statement rubbish
    4) C photosynthesis absorbs co2 and rest add
    5) C 2nd option due to use of only

  •  Khemchand Gujjar @khemchand-gujjar

1.A Renewable and Bio so eliminate option 2
    2.D all of them.
    3. B option 1 is overstatement
    4. C photosynthesis realease O2 and volcanic eruption co2
    5. C option 2 only word used. Groundwater table can be checked by less use.

  •  Aamir Atique @amir-atik

    1. B ( eliminated 2 coz something associated with bio cant be associated with non renewable as well, i think so)

    2. D( i dont remember the complete formula of coal but i m pretty sure that it contains the word N and when the go in air they may form oxides..)

    3. B( eliminated 1 coz i dont think there is any ongoing revolution at present(in 2012) which may have yielded a 30% outcome..)

    4. C(eliminated 1 coz photosynthesis absorbs and uses Co2 instead of releasing it)

    5. C( eliminated 2 coz the word only is used moreover in a dry farming, there are other methods as well, rest two statements seems appropriate with micro irrigation like sprinkling etc..)

  •  Ajay Mehra @ajay-mehra

    1. B – Bio means life and all good things
    2. D – coal rltd thing contains all harmful thing.
    3. B – 2nd true: market e equilibrium thing; 3rd true ex in pds system too many probl3ms ; 1st false: india is self sufficient in grains
    4. C – photosynthesis gives oxygen.
    5. A – 2nd stmnt extreme. 3rd wrong : gut felling

  •  Prerna Jaiswal @prerna-jaiswal

    1) B.”bio” means made from organic material, therefore 2 is wrong, 1 & 2 contradict each other.
    2) D
    4) C. During respiration, CO2 is consumed.
    5) C. since 2 is an extreme statement.

  •  Rishi ranjan @rishiranjan04

    1. B- The word “bio” signifies something that would have renewable source. Thus eliminating statement 2, Option B is the right answer. 2. D 3. B a 30 % drop in area under cultivation of food crops looks highly unlikely. 2nd and 3rd statement still exist and therefore, my answer would be option B. 4. C 5. C Eliminating second statement courtesy ” only”, statement 1 is correct. 3rd statement should be correct because as per me Micro irrigation should keep a check on surface run off. Therefore, answer should be C.

Please solve this irritating issue with website. Every time I open something on website on a new tab, a sign in message pops up.

I am already using website after sign-in (see the screenshot),but still it shows the same thing. It is really irritating to use website bcoz of this.

P.S. Couldn’t find any other medium/thread to raise the problem, that’s why I posted here.

  •  Aayush Shrut @aayush-shrut

1.) B, eliminating 2nd statement as “Bio” means renewable sources.
2.) D, CO2 and N2O are greenhouse gases, only last option has both of them together
3.) B, statement 1 is wrong, as food production has gradually increased, and such dramatic fall of 30% is extreme.
    4.) C, photosynthesis absorbs CO2
5.) C, 2nd statement is extreme, and groundwater can be checked with micro irrigation (goes with the name, micro = very small, so less depletion of groundwater).

  •  Vaibhav Manocha @vaibhav-manocha

    Thanks, Dr.V
Only if I am able to take such rational decisions while eliminating options in the exam hall, life would be much better.

    •  Dr V @dr-v

Try to take tests in exam like conditions and get the answers evaluated. You know tikdams would be applicable here but in the exam, you wouldn’t. If you have joined any test series of CD,Write down your approach for the questions you solve by tikdam and get them evaluated.

  •  Dushyant @cdushyant3

    1. B. 3,4 statements seem to t=be correct as bio relates to organic and should be eco friendly. Options containing 3,4 are b and d. 1 is common to both b and d so it must be correct. If 1 is correct second cannot be. Thus the answer should be option b.

    2. D. major air pollutants are all the 3 options so it should be d.

    3. B. statement 1 is incorrect as on one hand it talks about gradual change and on the other gives a figure of 30%. Eliminataing it we get option B.

    4. C. eliminate option 1 as photosynthesis adds oxygen and absorbs CO2. The other 3 add CO2. SO option c.

    5. C. eliminate option 2 as it is extreme. Option one is correct. Option 3 can be correct as micro irrigation can help efficient use of water, which would help reduce the amount of water withdrawn from the underground water tables for agriculture purposes.

  •  Narayana Sarma @narayanacbe

    1. B – Bio implies renewable nature- Eliminate 2- Only B is without 2
    2. D- Coal has Carbon as main constituent- Also atleast low sulphur content- Nitrogen i not sure- Choosing D
    3. B- We have seen record foodgrain production- not possible with 30% reduction in area sown- 1 Eliminated
    4. C- Photosynthesis releases Oxygen not CO2- 1 Eliminated- CO2 also released from Organic Decaying (linked it with radio”carbon” decay)- 3 Comes
    5. C- 2 is extreme- Eliminate 2- And 3 must come as ground water use is reduced by many folds

  •  Vaibhav Manocha @vaibhav-manocha

Runoff minimized.Hence nutrient loss minimized.Further leading to increase in the water table.
Food crops like wheat, rice, corn etc rarely are in the news for inflation. It is always onion, potatoes etc
Bio-means living substance. Biofuels etc. Hence can not be non renewable
