Core Books/NCERT
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles use a fuel cell to convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, which is then used to power the electric motor that drives the vehicle. The only byproduct of this process is water (H2O), which is emitted as “exhaust” from the vehicle. Therefore, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are considered to be zero-emission vehicles, as they do not produce any harmful pollutants or greenhouse gases during operation.
