MPSC changes pattern: Aligned with UPSC, to be implemented from 2023

Maharashtra PSC has recently released a notification citing changes in the pattern. Now the main examination will be subjective/descriptive in nature (essay type answers) instead of objective (MCQ type) questions. Also, an Ethics paper has also been introduced, modern history will also be included.

From earlier 6 papers in MPSC Mains now we will have 9 papers, with total marks now standing at 1750 in Mains, closely resembling UPSC’s pattern.

PapersSubjectsMarksNature of papers
Paper 1Marathi300Descriptive (Qualifying)
Paper 2English300Descriptive (Qualifying)
Paper 3Essay (Marathi or English)250Descriptive
Paper 4GS 1250Descriptive
Paper 5GS 2250Descriptive
Paper 6GS 3250Descriptive
Paper 6GS 4250Descriptive
Paper 8Optional Paper 1250Descriptive
Paper 9Optional Paper 2250Descriptive
1750 Marks
Closely resembling the UPSC pattern

Implications of this change

It has certainly made MPSC mains more comprehensive, requiring a wide-based knowledge just like UPSC.

  • It will be easier for UPSC aspirants to prepare for MPSC and vice-versa.
  • It improve the percentage of Marathi candidates appearing and clearing UPSC as the paper pattern is almost the same.
  • It will give equal opportunity to those from rural as well as urban areas. Now every candidate must play on a level playing field.
  • For those UPSC aspirants who have exhausted their attempts, they would find it easier to appear and crack MPSC.
  • Aspirants who will reappear in 2023 will have to consider it as a fresh attempt as they have to study almost from scratch.

All these pose an opportunity as well as a challenge for aspirants but for sure it calls for a change in strategy.

Attend Mega Seminar by Sajal sir and UPSC rankers from Maharashtra. Register here and align your strategy

CivilsDaily’s performance in UPSC 2021 and an overwhelming number of our Rankers from Maharashtra

UPSC 2021 results were released a few days back and it was a major validation of CivilsDaily’s student-centric approach, personalized mentorship, and commitment to your goal – cracking the UPSC IAS exam.

..amazing observation was the overwhelming number of rankers from Maharashtra.

This was evident from 200+ rankers, including 30+ in the top 50 in the UPSC 2021 exam. Another amazing observation was the overwhelming number of rankers from Maharashtra.

Moreover, we have thousands of CivilsDaily students from the state.

On the insistence of CivilsDaily’s alumni (ex-rankers) and our students from the state, we will be opening our first center in Maharashtra very soon, in Pune.

How is the Pune center going to help UPSC and Civil Services Aspirants from Maharashtra?

Saves you from the trauma of relocation

Aspirants have to leave their home state to Delhi, Karol Bagh for UPSC prep. It seriously dismantles their mental peace and continuity in preparation.

Now you no longer have to leave your state and come to Delhi for UPSC preparation.

Financially

Financially, by saving huge expenditure incurred in Karol Bagh on renting and tuition fees.

Now prepare for both: UPSC and MPSC

Recently the notification for MPSC was released and since the pattern is similar to UPSC now, we will be helping you prepare for MPSC as well.

Live lectures, Offline 1:1 Mentorship, Testing centre in Pune

We will be providing the best classroom lectures; UPSC-relevant tests and study material; experienced mentors and dedicated faculty.

CivilsDaily will always remain committed to a personalized and student-centric approach and will live for its vision of making UPSC and government service exam preparation simpler, effective, result-oriented, and affordable to every aspiring student.

Cleared Prelims 2022? Great! But don’t forget, the goal is UPSC 2022 | Do these 6 things (Read inside)- Assessing preparedness, starting answer writing, and more.

Your next steps are going to decide your success in the UPSC 2022 exam. Read below: What you should be doing, Bootcamp and Open Test || Talk to a senior mentor.

Hey aspirants, Prelims 2022 result was released a day before and congrats if you have qualified for the Mains 2022. Well, it calls for a celebration but if you are still celebrating please consider this as a wake-up call.

..only a super calculated, extremely planned, measurable, and adaptive strategy will sail you through the UPSC final list (without even bothering about interview marks).

Friends, the expectations and requirements of UPSC from a Mains candidate are very different compared to that from a Prelims candidate. You need a distinct temperament and fresh approach to tackle Mains. But only a super calculated, extremely planned, measurable, and adaptive strategy will sail you through the UPSC final list (without even bothering about interview marks).

What to do now?

1. Self-awareness: Know where you stand wrt your Mains preparation

You know the endpoint (clearing UPSC Mains) knowing where you have to start is essential. You must know your current preparation status, syllabus coverage, the time you have, how many hours can you dedicate to optional, GS, current affairs, etc. Talk(1-1) to CivilsDaily’s senior mentor to assess your prep status.

The best way would be to write a few answers. We have an Open Test preceded by a Mains Bootcamp on 25th June.

Register for CivilsDaily’s Bootcamp: 25th June 2022. This will be followed by an Open Mains Test on the same day. (click for more details)

2. Start making or organizing your Mains notes: 1-2 page crisp notes for every Mains-worthy topic that helps you write any question asked from a particular topic.

There is no denying the fact that you need content or information. That has to be comprehensive and organized in a usable format (enabling you to write answers).

If you haven’t prepared them, get on a call with CivilsDaily’s mentors to understand How to make awesome notes? and register for the Bootcamp tomorrow (Mridul, AIR 247, and other rankers had some awesome notes that they will share)

We will be sharing our Quality Enhancement Program very soon and such notes will be provided to you in that program.

3. Start Answer Writing Practice. From today only.

Well, this is a no-brainer. It would be better if that is under the guidance of a mentor and discussed with peers as well. By the way, we have a Mains-focused Telegram group, it is invite-only. Register for the Bootcamp, and we’ll email the link to you.

You can also have a look at Daily Answer Writing Enhancement Program.

In the Bootcamp tomorrow, AIR 247 Mridul and Sukanya Rana, Mains head, CivilsDaily will tell you exactly how to start answer writing.

Register for CivilsDaily’s Bootcamp: 25th June 2022. This will be followed by an Open Mains Test on the same day. (click for more details)

4. Join a Mains Test series or Mains program.

Best test series for Mains? (answers from Quora)

You must invest in a good test series. And with so many of them in the market which one to go for. Well, there are just a few things that you must take note of: (Details of CivilsDaily’s test here)

  • Test series or Mains program must include Personalized Mentorship. A mentor will help you understand the requirements of UPSC mains, the pattern and format will be there to resolve all your doubts, analyze your checked copies – question by question, provide you feedback and necessary inputs, and a roadmap to integrate those inputs into your preparation.
  • Questions must be evidence-based (as per UPSC pattern) and relevant to the current year. There are many famous institutes with outdated questions in the test series.
  • It must be evaluated by seasoned evaluators and not just another aspirant like you who might not have even appeared for a single UPSC interview. Yes, many famous institutes do this. All of CivilsDaily’s evaluators have years of experience and qualify the criteria of at least 3 UPSC interviews.

CivilsDaily’s Mains Program and Test series have been launched. Schedule a call with a senior UPSC mentor to know which one should you join.

5. Don’t ignore UPSC Essay and Ethics: They’re a game-changer

Many of the aspirants ignore these till Prelims and feel insufficiently or totally unprepared for both UPSC Essay and Ethics (GS Paper 4). Integrate them in your Mains timetable and strategy now. We have launched Mentorship driven Smash Essay 2022 under Zeeshan Hashmi and Smash Ethics 2022 under Sukanya Rana.

Just get on a call with us to plan and discuss how to cover UPSC Essay and Ethics. We’ll have a detailed discussion.

6. Get a Mentor for Mains 2022. You don’t want to waste an attempt.

Someone who has an experience of at least 4 Mains or 2-3 UPSC interviews. One who should be able to provide you a patient ear and regular feedback. One who is sympathetic to your issues understands your weaknesses and is committed to helping you improve day by day, question by question, and test by test.

Don’t have a mentor? Oh, you have one at CivilsDaily.

With over 80% of enrolled students in 2021 becoming UPSC Top rankers, Smash Mains 2022 is back. Also, what we have noticed is about 85% of questions in UPSC Mains paper are from Smash Test Series.

As an aspirant if you have taken many test series, but are unable to score above 100 marks and want to improve your scores before Mains 2022, then this program is for you!

How has Smash Mains helped 2021-2022 Aspirants in Preparing for UPSC?

What do aspirants need in their UPSC preparation journey? They need a senior who will give them moral support and the required logistics to prepare for the tough exam in a simplified manner.

You can clear the exam only with confidence and consistency. And to achieve both, you require a personalized mentor. Many aspirants feel that just attending classes or tests is not beneficial for them. So we tweaked our program to include mentorship both in our tests series and classes. Aspirants feel they can reach out to us anytime with their concerns and we are available to sort them out.

Message from Sajal Sir

Dear Students,

For some of you, prelims have never been a challenge for you. You have been missing the main cut-off with a small margin (repeatedly). This means that there are some fundamental issues with your approach. You might be aware or not of this. But just realization is not enough, you have to work on its execution as well. And bringing that to fruition will be possible through a guided process under a meticulously designed plan.

Note: The Entry is Restricted to those who have appeared in UPSC interviews in the past 2 years or have missed the mains cut off by a whisker.

The focus is on identifying and highlighting the issues with your preparation (information / analysis / utilization). According to your strength and weaknesses, a tailor-made strategy is developed. Under Sajal sir’s strict monitoringincremental improvements are aimed every day, after every session.

My marks in UPSC 2017 GS Mains paper were:

  • GS Paper 1 – 132
  • GS Paper 2 – 125
  • GS Paper 3 – 130

Key Takeways About Smash Mains 2022

Almost 35+ Ranker in the Top 100 of UPSC 2021 is a Civilsdaily Student.

Your mentor, Sajal Sir is himself the 2017 topper of GS Mains. He has appeared for interview many times.

Over 400 students have emerged as toppers under Sajal Sir’s mentorship in the last 7 years.

Sajal Sir will daily motivate you on our chat-based platform, Habitat and have weekly 1-on-1 discussions with you after every test.

You don’t have to waste any more time finding the strategy (value added notes, test series or timetable ) for the next 3 months. You will get the guidance for it.

You will gain access to Civildaily’s Samachar Manthan – For holistic and comprehensive coverage of Current Affairs.

You will have exclusive membership to Smash Mains club in Habitat.

One of our other Civilsdaily Student cleared the exams in 2020 to become an IPS Officer. He wrote the 2021 exam again as he aims for an IAS posting. This is what he said about our program

Progression of Smash Mains 2022

After completing the Mains Test series, you will have a one-to-one detailed and in-depth interaction with Sajal sir. Final refinements are done to every answer. Value addition material, as well as pointers, will be provided here. We will work with you to ensure you have enough material for value addition. Our focus will be on providing tips that add the missing X factor to your answers.

Why is Smash 2022 the best way to prepare for mains?

Individual attention and approachability are the USPs of this program. Listen to what our Smash Mains 2020 student and topper Pooja Gupta (AIR 42) says about the program.

Not putting Penguins among the Fowls – You already know how to write an average answer (you’re missing it by a few marks actually). You want to know how to increase your score from 90 to 110-115. The approach followed by other institutes in their Test series is the same for a veteran and a complete newbie and here lies the problem. Without personalized one-to-one interaction with someone like Sajal sir (who has scored these awesome marks), it will be difficult for you to rectify these minute yet very important shortcomings.

Evaluation is a strength of this program and we put it on a high priority. Sajal sir himself is involved in the process, unlike other institutes where evaluation is outsourced to those who themselves might not have appeared for mains (It’s bizarre). It shouldn’t be based on ‘model answers’ as there are 3-4 ways of approaching an answer. Only a seasoned player will be able to go beyond these model answers and be able to appreciate your approach (If it’s innovative) even if it differs from the model answers provided.

Test copies get checked in a time-bound manner. The questions, answers and material provided are of the highest quality.

Always on time and insightful discussions end with a reality check and motivation to perform better in the next test.

Emphasis on execution and utilization of knowledge – Mains is not only about knowledge but the way you express the relevant knowledge in the most optimum manner.

Sajal sir’s interventions are highly specific and not generalized. Sitting right in front of you he walks you through each and every question. Always there, he will not let you lose your focus.

AIR 148 UPSC 2020 topper and our Civilsdaily student, Ponmani explains why answer writing with mentorship is necessary for Mains.

Special offer for Smash Mains students and Previously enrolled students

What are we offering and how is it unique?

We’ve innovated at every step of the process.

Our research tells us there are 8 broad themes of essays being asked since 2010 – Economy, Polity, Women Issues, Education, Science & Tech, Philosophy, IR, Miscellaneous.

But there is some rationality to the way UPSC selects essay topics. Those themes are highly relevant to the current times and one can find a strong correlation with current affairs of the past year(s).

We plan to develop your competencies so that you can be better prepared for the actual exam.

An innovative methodology for reviews

Our biggest innovation lies in our review methodology. Specific portions of your essay will be highlighted with symbols to indicate issues in essay writing

  1. (X) Cross–FUNDAMENTAL FLAWS like judgments/strong postures which need to be avoided at all costs.
  2. (*)Star -APPRECIATION for uniqueness.
  3. STRUCTURE is not maintained. Issues with Language and expression.
  4. GENERAL SUGGESTIONS for candidates.

Along with this, Zeeshan sir will also leave specific reviews on strengths and weaknesses.

We don’t want to merely suggest additional points that can be googled by the student themselves or point out superficial flaws like not ‘sticking to the topic’. They don’t necessarily highlight the shortcomings in the essay. This adds very little value to students. We go much beyond that and help students fix major flaws in their essays.

10 parameters on which your essays are going to get evaluated
  1. Comprehension of the topic
  2. Language and Expression
  3. Structure and Organisation of thought.
  4. Objectivity and Biases. Balance of perception
  5. Attitude whether a learner or judgmental
  6. Focus and attention
  7. Content and Source matter, Knowledge and information processing capability
  8. Ability to forge links in an interdisciplinary manner
  9. The simplicity of disposition
  10. Observational Skills
Model essays with indicative structure and good essay copies

You will be provided with good essay copies to serve as sample answers. This is a better alternative than sample answers which are hastily written and at times not updated with the latest figures.

Students have an incorrect impression that going through a sample essay will somehow help them write better essays. This is absolutely incorrect.

To develop your competency in tackling different topics, you have to be able to come up with appropriate structures. This aspect of the program addresses this issue.

The expectation from you would be that you study the solutions in detail and try to address the shortcomings in your essays. Should doubts still persist, we’re here to help.

One-to-one Mentorship and Civilsdaily’s handholding

This component of the program is the most important. Post-evaluation of your essay test you will get on a one-to-one discussion with Zeeshan sir. He will discuss the topic in considerable depth, appropriate structure, pitfalls to avoid, etc.

Along with that, Zeeshan Sir will also discuss copies presenting different styles in which the essays could be attempted.

How to write UPSC IAS essay
UPSC mains scorecards of Zeeshan sir. A whopping jump of 65 marks in the Essay paper.
Membership to an exclusive group on Habitat

Habitat is our learning platform, here you’ll be given membership to an exclusive Essay group. This group will be administered by Zeeshan sir, Sajal sir, in-service officers, rankers, and other mentors.

For essays, you need multiple perspectives to understand a topic or an issue in its entirety. You need discussions; arguments; confluence, confrontation, and integration of ideas. Here, discussions will be facilitated by mentors and enriched by different viewpoints from peers. Moreover, you can ask and discuss any of your doubts with peers and Zeeshan sir.

Besides these, you will be given the following

  • Any additional material that we release for essays.
  • Notes and reference material including good articles, essays, etc. on Habitat group
