Subject: Trivia

  • Civilsdaily’s TS for the IAS 2017 Aspirants Starts 11th September

Last year, for the IAS Prelims 2016, we had come up with 10 Short Sectional Tests and 4 FLTS to give our users a well rounded last minute preparation.

Since Civilsdaily’s Newscards and articles have always been bullish on current affairs, this years’ current affairs heavy paper was a cakewalk for most of our students.

But that should not be the only reason why you should join us for IAS 2017 Prep. In fact, we shun all the comparisons on the lines of 70% were from our TS and such like. Click here to read why?

What benefitted our students the most were our well defined conceptual questions and our heavy focus on making them solve those questions with smart hack techniques (Tikdams).

This year, we have set up a dedicated academic team to focus on the nitty gritties of the UPSC Exam Space

    • – You would have seen the heavy initiatives – Target Mains – GS Questions with DNA Model Answers which is already running on the portal every day
    • – The 3 tier test series has been made so that Beginners to IAS Prep get a separate treatment which helps them evolve their test taking skills to the Advanced level guys after the first 6 tests
    • – All 32 tests are 100 mark papers which focus on one particular section only

Our team consists of members who’ve qualified prelims many times with ease and are well-versed with the changing patterns of UPSC. They have also been instrumental in creating test series for top notch institutes and are aware of the deficiencies in them. We have put together a program that is fine and balanced and increases your chances to get through.

    #1. Focus on concepts

Be assured that our questions will cover ALL core concepts that are an absolute must. Do not neglect your static course at the cost of current affairs preparation. We are going to make sure you stay on top of everything.

#2. Intelligent questions over Difficult ones

Some coaching institutes/ Test Series take immense pride in framing questions that test very advanced and alien concepts which are hard to find in reference book.

Such questions are irrelevant and have a negative impact on a student’s preparation, specially the one’s who are just starting out. A relatively low score makes a student go hunting for difficult questions and ends up wasting time he would’ve spent perfecting his base concepts.

Here’s an example of such question –

    Consider the following statements :

    1. Ventricular systole of heart increases the ventricular pressure causing the closure of semilunar valves, producing the second heart sound called dub.

    2. Ventricular diastole of heart decreases the ventricular pressure causing the closure of the right and left atrio-ventricular valve providing first heart sound called lubb.

which of the statements given above is/are carroect?

    a) 1 only

    b) 2 only

    c) both 1 and 2

    d) neither 1 nor 2.

Good luck wracking your head against a wall if you think such questions are going to pave way for success!

We believe that you should be thorough with the base & reference books + Newspapers and should be able to attempt difficult questions from here.

The Intelligent questions should be such that they make you think of tikdams and smart hacks to solve for. That’s the sure shot way of confidence building. You will come out of our FLTs and write in comments about how you hacked through some of our questions – and feel empowered because the options were framed in a way to help you do that!

#3. Not engaging in vague nitpicking

Amateur test series have all sorts of questions made from insignificant lines of reference books/ ncerts. Moreover they are framed in such a manner that its difficult to infer what they actually mean if one has not read those exact sentences.

Consider one such vague question –

The juvenile justice care & protection bill 2014 has been passed by both the houses of the parliament, seek to bring the following changes

    1. To lower culpability as an adult from 18 to 16 years

    2. To amend the juvenile Justice Care and Protection Act 2000 suitably

    3. To implement the recommendations of JS Verma Committee on criminal law reforms.

Now, many would find stmt 2 to be correct. But the catch here is the JJ C&P Act is not an amendment but a replacement of the JJ C& P Act 2000. And that is what this question maker wanted to test you on.

This is a badly structured question. This comes neither in the ambit of smart testing nor in the ambit of tikdams. We don’t think UPSC sets illogical traps like these and neither do we plan to do so.

Make sure that every question counts

We are spending a lot of time framing questions so that you understand the requirement and attempt accordingly.

We have separated static tests (basic and advanced) from current affairs tests so you know your weak points individually and can go back and hone them. No point giving ~20 CA questions with 80 Static questions. It is all about FOCUS!

Our explanations would have sufficient amounts of tikdams to help you develop that knack of problem solving which is going to help you prepare for any kind of exam pattern.

In case, you wish to refer to our mocks from last year – feel free to subscribe to the Open Mocks Program on our prelims.civilsdaily.com portal to feel the difference.

  • Straight from the heart: A Doctor turned IAS Aspirant

I’m an mbbs graduate from Medical College, Kolkata (2008-13 batch) and was quite ‘happy’ with my life. Earning quite good, OK with the professional satisfaction. But you know, that’s not all for life, and for me, it never was. Being ‘happy’ and being ‘fulfilled’ is quite a different thing. As I have been in politics in my college days (and still in it) I know something is not right for my country, something is very much not right with my people. And everything starts from a ‘policy making’; a decision which is being taken in an ac room is changing the life of millions in terms of good or bad. I’m very much aware that the prescription I’m writing for someone has little to do with the ‘health’ of him/her. Or in a broad sense, to the health of India, it’s IMR, MMR or other parameters. So I was restless with my life, my choices and very much concerned if I can reach somewhere from where I can make some change, make my actions really counted, my life ‘fulfilled’. During my college days, I thought for IAS a couple of times but couldn’t find a single platform/ mentor/ resource from where I can start my journey, so dropped it. And now when I made my mind to be a ‘rowdy’ last year I just had two and a half months left for prelim. On the 22nd of may, I had no idea what a repo rate is or what the hell is CoP 21 and I started my prep with a single sentence- ‘Let’s do it’. For the next one week, I cultivated every online platform, downloaded a handsome amount of GB pdfs/ ppts/ videos, bought most recommended books for each subject and started gulping those. And after a month or so, I found civilsdaily.

And it’s time to put a big smile and some red blushes in your face. You are just 1year old or so I guess, but you are street smart, intelligent and humble. I didn’t have much time for current affairs part, it wasn’t possible either. But you know, I have done quite good in this all-ca-prelim paper only because you were there. I also subscribed to your FLT series and got 250-300 rank on an average and was very much disappointed with myself (and also you) after every test. I was like, go to hell man, why should I know these current affairs? Ask some static na? And on the 7th August evening, I was thanking you because for those 3tests coupled with your titbits and tikdams, though couldn’t kiss it but I somehow managed to at least hug the paper.

And I’m not going to make it for mains this year, probably will fall 4-5 marks short than the cutoff. So I’m here again, let’s do it. And not opting for vision IAS or Sriram or IAS baba or Insights but YOU. I’ve seen your smartness as well as your maturity and decided if I have to choose a single platform, it’s YOU. And I don’t know if I’m right or not, most probably UPSC will continue this ca based prelim trend for coming years and with this, CIVILSDAILY is going to be a giant, an unparalleled master for upsc preparation in coming days. I don’t know if I’ll find what I’m looking for at the end of this road or even finish this marathon, but you’ll keep up your good work that’s I know for sure..

That’s it, I’ve poured my heart out. All the best to you and if you’ve really read this whole thing, just leave an ‘all the very best to you doc’ for me 🙂

PS- my english is not up to the mark (thanks to 34years of communist regime of West Bengal) but I hope I’ve made my point.

This post was an email from a reader. Has been kept anonymous for his comfort but we hope this brings some peace to all of you who have had some bad days. If you wish to write to us about your good/ bad days – email us at hello[at]civilsdaily.com

  • Inspiration to tryst with destiny!

I joined Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati in 2006. With an attire of khaadi kurta and pony-tail I soon got the name of “Rocky-sir” amongst students.

In 2007 August 15 I asked students to join us for a group discussion on the major problems in India and what “we” (i.e. you and me) can do towards it.

The squirrel from the Ramayana has always been one of my biggest inspirations. For those who may not know the story, in the epic Ramayana Lord Rama builds a bridge from Indian mainland to Sri Lanka. All the mighty animals from the jungle came to help the Lord.

Even a tiny squirrel did not let his size deter it and came to help. To have the maximum contribution it found a novel way. It would dip in ocean, then roll on sand and then shake off the sand on the bridge.

Pausing the story here I an just say that I have always believed that irrespective of our size we can contribute in our own ways. Few days after that group discussion one student came to meet me with a lot of his ideas.

We tried to work together on some of those which later gave rise to the Zero-Illiteracy-Zone (ZIZ) activities in the IIT where our students would teach the children from local schools over the weekends.

Long after that phase a few weeks back the same student asked me to discuss and muse over the problems of the nation and what can be done. And we had the first meeting over which we tried to discuss the major problems of the nation. And on this independence day blog I shall try to put down what I feel as the major issues in the nation right now.

One aspect we discussed was the range of welfare majors the government has been trying to take. Some tend to suggest that the government should not give anything for free. However, in a civilised society it is just inhumane to deny our own citizens the right to the bare minimum basic amenities like food and medical aid. However there are two major problems in these schemes. First of all many of these do not reach the intended sector because of corruption. And secondly many times those who get the benefit of things like free food choose not to work at all. Corruption is in lime light anyway. So we shall try to focus on the second problem of laziness. This comes when a person loses inspiration to improve his own lot.

The second biggest issue we found was “inequality” be it based on caste, religion or sex. Female foeticide and infanticide are still happening as we muse. Caste based politics and discrimination is still a big deterrent in many regions. That made me think of how things are different in South Africa and India. In SA they tend to think that the white minority is still successful because they have inherited lot of capital over generations. In India (and also in many cases in SA) the real inheritance is not money, rather heritage. Because my ancestors were of high caste, learned and respected I “believe I can do it as well”. So the actual problem we found (besides the usual age old stigma and the lack of education) was that we need to inspire people growing/living under oppressive environment that they can do it.

I do not want to tell that corruption or the lack of education is are not big problems. I just want to thrust that the real and the biggest challenge will be to “inspire” and make Indians “tryst with destiny”.

We do not want to expend our energies in modules which are not adopted by the students. So, let us know in the comments.

    On that note –

    1. A great thumbs up for the Mains probables for 2016 – The initiative Target Mains is seeing a lot of quality participation and keeps us motivated to give you the best set of questions across all GS Papers – Bookmark this link.

  • [IMP] For the Hindi Users of Civilsdaily App

    Hello,

We need to arrive at a very crucial decision and we need your help in that. This blog is specifically addresses to the users of the hindi (translated) newscards.

To know that the readers of the hindi newscards are serious, we need you to consider spending <Rs. 100 per month and pay up an advance membership fee of Rs. 1000.

This is the link to pay – Click here.

It is important for us to maintain the infrastructure for the hindi translations and we need to support our product base with the amount raised for it. Right now, the traffic of hindi to english readers is at a meager 5%/ 95% and it has become practically unviable for us to continue with such low numbers.

Our goal is to raise Rs. 2,00,000 (2 lakh) within a span of 14 days, starting from 19th August 2016.

If we are able to raise the desired amount (2L), then only those users who pay for the membership will be able to see our daily translations. We will continue investing in the code base and provide you with translations from the best of the papers.

If we are not able to raise the desired amount, the well wishers who paid up for the hindi newscards will be refunded their full amount to their respective mode of payments. We will not be keeping the money with us.

But, we will then have to sadly, discontinue the hindi offering.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

Q1. What’s the difference between Flagship, Advanced and CA Focus modules?

Flagship program is the most comprehensive offering for the IAS 2017 aspirant who wish to be comprehensively prepared and tested in both the Static and Dynamic aspects of IAS Prelims syllabus at Basic and Advanced levels.

    • Flagship Course = 6 Basic Static + 10 Advanced Static + 8 CA Focus + 8 FLTs
    • Advanced Course = 10 Advanced Static + 8 CA Focus + 8 FLTs
    • CA Focus = 8 CA Focus

NOTE: All the modules will receive complimentary monthly subscription of CivilsDigest Magazine. If you have never purchased or read our rich pdfs – click here (9MB file) to download

Q2. Why should I go for the basic or advanced course? Wasn’t this year’s paper 90% CA focussed?

If you have given a good look to the IAS 2016 Prelims paper, you would find that it is heavily focussed on current affairs. So much so that…

Ha! Don’t write off the static just yet. Rather, make sure you do not go overboard on the static course with unnecessary books and workload. Get your basics with NCERTs + follow just one more reference book (given in our timetable) to cover the static syllabus.

Our Flagship module covers limited books but ensures that you master the static syllabus.

    • The Basic Sectional tests would be focussed on basic and advanced aspects of static syllabus only
    • The Monthly CA tests will focus on current affairs of the month only
    • The Advanced tests will test you on static modules + CA of the month
    • The FLTs will give you the most comprehensive assessment of your preparation

Q3. How do I decide which course to join?

    A. If you are a beginner to IAS Prep or a veteran who could not give an honest attempt this year, we would suggest that you join the Flagship Course.

We plan to have a dedicated webinar before each test to help you read the subject matter of the coming test and improve your test taking abilities. Many a students tend to miss the most basic aspects of the syllabus and with the first 6 tests, we plan to augment you with each one of them via tests, titbits or tikdams!

    B. If you are an advanced IAS player and have his/ her basics in place – join the Advanced Module, and get tested on the prescribed static books + monthly current affairs full length tests and the final FLTs. You would be competing with the students of the Basic module as they graduate up and fine tune their skills.

    C. If you are supremely confident of your static preparation and just want to be kept in check with your Current Affairs mastery, join in the CA Focus Module for monthly current affairs tests. You will be competing with the Flagship and Advanced users as we roll out the AIRs the very next day.

    Q4. Where’s the detailed schedule/ timetable?

    1. For Flagship course – Click here
    2. For Advanced course – Click here
    3. For CA Focus course – Click here

Note: For downloading the NCERTs, click here for FREE Pdfs.

Q5. I am a student of 2016 Prelims FLTs module, what’s in for me?

For the FLT 2016 students, we had promised to accomodate the price of the tests in the 2017 test series (Read the old blog). When you subscribe to any of the Flagship or Advanced course – you will automatically have 499 waived off.

Q6. I have more questions to ask before I join in, what then?

Sure. Do write back to us at hello[at]civilsdaily.com with your specific query. We will get back within 24 hours. In case you believe that your query could be of general help, do post on the comments and we will include that in our FAQ section here.

Q7. How did your students perform in IAS Prelims 2016?

Interesting question 🙂 We did amazing last year but not just because we predicted 70-80% of IAS Prelims questions. That’s actually a marketing gimmick but because we ensured that our test takers inculcate a habit of smart guessing and tikdams to eliminate options with limited knowledge.

Want to know more? Read this blog

  • This Independence Day, break FREE from the Hoax of IAS Prelims’ Prediction

IMP: Civilsdaily IAS Prelims 2017 Test Series Module Launched – Click here

If traditional wisdom is anything to go by, we should be writing a post on:

    • “How Civilsdaily cracked 70+ hits on this IAS Prelims”,
    • “How our detailed and unwavering focus on current affairs via newscards got was bang on the bucks this year” OR
    • “How some 100+ Test series users mailed us with gratitude on scoring a 120+ in this year’s Prelims” (+ their email snapshots)

Such a declaration is usually followed by a compilation of the said questions and irrelevant links to support the claim.

In fact, truth be told, since this year was bullish on current affairs (which has been the raisond’etre of Civilsdaily Newscards) we were inevitably drawn to do so here, here, here and here before we stopped and realised that it’s time to end this madness of hits and misses and call a spade a spade.

No coaching can predict 70-80 questions in any IAS Prelims Exam. That’s a marketing gimmick and it’s time that senior players come out transparent.

Here’s how you should actually divide and analyse the IAS Prelims questions:

    1. The Good questions which are so easy even RG can attempt them
    2. The Bad(ass) questions but very much doable via tikdams!
    3. The Ugly questions and hug your TS makers if they helped you retain them!

    #1. The Good (Pappu Sawal):

Senior players of the UPSC game would concur with us that every year, there are about 30-35 questions which are easily doable for a sincere student. Anyone who has done his/ her static syllabus even once will be able to solve these questions easily (with or without a Test Series)

Also, if you haven’t completed the course and are not up to date with the current affairs, joining any number of test series with tall claims to producing 60-80 questions is fruitless. It is not going to pan out for you.

Don’t believe us? Look at these set of questions from the IAS Prelims 2016:

Very straight forward questions from history. Available in all the sources.

[History] What was the main reason for the split in the Indian National Congress at Surat in 1907?

    1. Introduction of communalism into Indian politics by Lord Minto.
    2. Extremists’ lack of faith in the capacity of the moderates to negotiate with the British Government.
    3. Foundation of Muslim League.
    4. Aurobindo Ghosh’s inability to be elected as the President of the Indian National Congress.

[History] The plan of Sir Stafford Cripps envisaged that after the Second World War

    1. India should be granted complete independence.
    2. India should be partitioned into two before granting independence.
    3. India should be made a republic with the condition that she will join the Commonwealth.
    4. India should be given Dominion status.

[History] The ‘Swadeshi’ and ‘Boycott’ were adopted as methods of struggle for the first time during the

    1. Agitation against the Partition of Bengal
    2. Home-Rule Movement
    3. Non-Cooperation Movement
    4. Visit of the Simon Commission to India

Easy questions from Polity. The other questions are also straight from the book but were hidden. Some of them may qualify in the ‘bad category’ but that’s where tikdams come to rescue!

[Polity] The Parliament of India acquires the power to legislate on any item in the State List in the national interest if a resolution to that effect is passed by the

    1. Lok Sabha by a simple majority of its total membership.
    2. Lok Sabha by a majority of not less than two-thirds of its total membership.
    3. Rajya Sabha by a simple majority of its total membership.
    4. Rajya Sabha by a majority of not less than two-thirds of its members present and voting.

    [Polity] Consider the following statements:

    1. The minimum age prescribed for any person to be a member of Panchayat is 25 years.
    2. A Panchayat reconstituted after premature dissolution continues only for the remainder period.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

    1. 1 only
    2. 2 only
    3. Both 1 and 2
    4. Neither 1 nor 2

Easy questions on simple economics concepts. Even the options were not confusing. Only 4 really conceptual, rest on current happenings.

[Economics] There has been a persistent deficit budget year after year. Which action/ actions of the following can be taken by the Government to reduce the deficit?

    1. Reducing revenue expenditure
    2. Introducing new welfare schemes
    3. Rationalizing subsidies
    4. Reducing import duty

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

    1. 1 only
    2. 2 and 3 only
    3. 1 and 3 only
    4. 1, 2, 3 and 4

[Economics] Which of the following is/are included in the capital budget of the Government of India?

    1. Expenditure on acquisition of assets like roads, buildings, machinery, etc.
    2. Loans received from foreign governments.
    3. Loans and advances granted to the States and Union Territories.

Select the correct answer using the code given below.

    1. 1 only
    2. 2 and 3 only
    3. 1 and 3 only
    4. 1, 2 and 3

Geography had a drastic reduction this year but still – who wouldn’t know the tributaries of a major river!

[Geography] Which of the following is/are tributary/tributaries of Brahmaputra?

    1. Dibang
    2. Kameng
    3. Lohit

Select the correct answer using the code given below.

    1. 1 only
    2. 2 and 3 only
    3. 1 and 3 only
    4. 1, 2 and 3

Even if you were not thorough with current affairs but would have just skimmed through daily newscards, you should be able to solve the ones listed below.

[CA] A recent movie titled The Man Who Knew Infinity is based on the biography of (a) S. Ramanujan (b) S. Chandrasekhar (c) S.N. Bose (d) C.V. Raman

[CA] ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ is sometimes mentioned in the news in the context of the affairs of (a) African Union (b) Brazil (c) European Union (d) China

[CA] The term ‘Intended Nationally Determined Contributions’ is sometimes seen in the news in the context of:

    1. Pledges made by the European countries to rehabilitate refugees from the war-affected Middle East.
    2. Plan of action outlined by the countries of the world to combat climate change.
    3. Capital contributed by the member countries in the establishment of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
    4. Plan of action outlined by the countries of the world regarding Sustainable Development Goals.

[CA] In the context of which of the following do you sometimes find the terms ‘amber box, blue box and green box’ in the news? (a) WTO affairs (b) SAARC affairs (c) UNFCCC affairs (d) India-EU negotiations on FTA

Then there would be a selection of current affairs questions that you’ll find in every test series because they were the most contested and discussed topics of the year!

    For example:

    • The question on Stand Up India Scheme
    • NGBRA has always been a favorite topic hence a question picked by every respected TS
    • Mission Indradhanush, Project Loon, Agenda 21, Gadgil Committee report, Bitcoins and so on and many more!

Bottom line? The list above goes on and on and covers some ~35 odd questions. To claim that our platform got these ones correct and cross reference some links (with tangential content) to back the claims is an insult to a serious aspirants’ study habits. If you are a newbie – be very cautious of such tall claims.

And this brings us to the next set of questions:

    #2. The Bad(ass) questions:

What differentiates UPSC from other exams are these questions which are not tough but tricky. Dr. V has demonstrated so many times that questions can be solved by tikdams and in fact this is one of the most important series which can be developed over time.

Read here, for getting a taste of it and then read the comments of the users who benefitted after cultivating this hack for themselves.

We have made sure that questions in our FLTs and Mock tests do make you think twice and take educated guesses. Not sure what we mean? Read on:

[Economics/ CA] With reference to the ‘Trans-Pacific Partnership’, consider the following statements:

    1. It is an agreement among all the Pacific Rim countries except China and Russia.
    2. It is a strategic alliance for the purpose of maritime security only.

Tikdam: Notice the red flags? Would you not automatically cross 1 and 2. It’s a trade partnership and “all” countries really? Where is colombia? Where is papua new guinea?

We can provide you the links of TPP when we covered it but think again. What would really help you become a PRELIMS KILLER? The fact that we overdosed you with tonnes of questions and content OR the fact that we requested and made sure you develop this knack of thinking?

    Still not convinced?

[Environment/ CA] With reference to an initiative called ‘The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB)’, which of the following statements is/are correct?

    1. It is initiative hosted by UNEP, IMF and World Economic Forum.
    2. It is a global initiative that focuses on drawing attention to the economic benefits of biodiversity.
    3. It presents an approach that can help decision-makers recognize, demonstrate and capture the value of ecosystems and biodiversity.

Tikdam: It’s a difficult question but think over this fact – Organizations with different mandates won’t work together. What has IMF got to do with E&B stuff? Do you see the red flag? IMF mostly concerns itself with Banking institutions.

    Take one more, shall we?

[World/ CA] With reference to ‘Organization for the prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)’ consider the following statements:

    1. It is an organization of European Union in working relation with NATO and WHO
    2. It monitors chemical industry to prevent new weapons free emerging
    3. It provides assistance and protection to Stated Parties against chemical weapons threats.

Tikdam: NATO a defence alliance working with WHO. Highly unlikely! See the red flag there? Also – an international organisation of EU? That’s an oxymoron!

There are more such examples – Read here to get a taste of it.

Bottom line? There is no dearth of content. If it were up to us, we would have given you every damn CA on earth and made you guilty of not going through all of them by pitching with a 100% strike rate on this year’s PRELIMS. But that’s not going to help you, right?

Prepare Smart: If you are paying online for a TS, we take it that you are sincere with your money and efforts. Pick the platform which has the ability to uplift your game to the next level by reinforcing all the titbits and tikdams. Pick a platform which makes learning easy and rewarding to your senses.

Believe us, there is just no other effective way to prepare for daily current affairs THAN our daily newscards on Civilsdaily App. It’s short, crisp, clutter free and narrows your focus to the very relevant news.

Since we have a zen like focus on CA, we even got the UGLY questions bang on the target for this year’s PRELIMS (except a few) but to be very honest:

    1. They were quite difficult to be retained and revised by an aspirant
    2. You only have to make sure you clear the Prelims by a comfortable margin as the numbers are not carried forward

You want to know the ugly ones?

    #3. The Ugly:

    • Most of the coaching/ test series did not have any passing reference to these factual questions
    • Even if they do, it’s difficult for a student to pick it up unless the content is explained in a lucid and interesting way
    • Imagine giving 3000+ questions to an aspirants – you are bound to land a few in your kitty but trust us, you are far better off with developing a knack of titbits + tikdams

Some of the ugly ones are –

[Environment/ CA] Recently, our scientists have discovered a new and distinct species of banana plant which attains a height of about 11 metres and has orange-coloured fruit pulp. In which part of India has it been discovered? (a) Andaman Islands (b) Anaimalai Forests (c) Maikala Hills (d) Tropical rain forests of northeast

Most of you would have seen that banana’s pic but cuhhmoon, how are we supposed to remember every state’s discovery!

[CA] With reference to pre-packaged items in India, it is mandatory to the manufacturer to put which of the following information on the main label, as per the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011?

    1. List of ingredients including additives
    2. Nutrition information
    3. Recommendations, if any, made by the medical profession about the possibility of any allergic reactions
    4. Vegetarian/non-vegetarian

    Select the correct answer using the code given below: (a) 1, 2 and 3 (b) 2, 3 and 4 (c) 1, 2 and 4 (d) 1 and 4 only

This issue came up in the Maggie controversy. We had run a whole story + CD explains (click here) but we never thought that UPSC would go this detailed and neither did we impress upon you.

[CA] SWAYAM’, an initiative of the Government of India, aims at
    (a) promoting the Self Help Groups in rural areas
    (b) providing financial and technical assistance to young start-up entrepreneurs
    (c) promoting the education and health of adolescent girls
    (d) providing affordable and quality education to the citizens for free

This was a one off event and we had covered it in our newscards but again, not much mention in the year that followed. Those of you who would have read this, would have retained it –

    https://www.civilsdaily.com/what-is-swayam/

[CA] Some question on a specie of butterfly discovered in Maharashtra. We missed this one for you 🙁

[CA]  With reference to the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), consider the following statements :
    1. IMFC discusses matters of concern affecting the global economy, and advises the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the direction of its work.
    2. The World Bank participates as observer in IMFC’s meetings.

Really! How is someone supposed to go this detailed! As if other organisations are not enough, we go and fetch IMFC as well!

So, what’s to be expected of Civilsdaily for IAS 2017 aspirants?

    1. We are slowly going to intensify our newscards – Make sure that atleast you have enough material to bookmark and revise while you take those metro rides and chai sutta breaks
    2. We are going to launch 3 different test series. It will start sometime in second week of september 2016. We believe that different segments of users need different level or preparation and peer group –
    3. Complete revamp of the CivilsDigest magazine [details soon]
    4. Weekend Webinars to reinforce the weekly current affairs in case you missed them. This will help us reinforce the probably UGLY questions and also take up the most discussed topics on Forum OR the stories! [details soon]
    5. More of Titbits and Tikdams in explanations and static content so that you are rest assured of being taken care of in Prelims
    6. AQAD (A question a day): Starting mains level discussions with model answers at the end of the day – This is specially targeted for the IAS 2016 Mains junta.

We will release detailed timetable and fee structure in a day or two.

PS: We hope you were able to appreciate our analysis on Prelims. This is true for every year. The only way we can hope to train you is by reinforcing the joy of learning the boring parts of a subject and making you expert in tikdams and titbits! Rest is all mithya.

PPS: If you feel that this helped, that this actually makes sense, please do share and circulate it among your peer group. We did actually covered most of the current affairs in our newscards but since we did not have a Test Series or weekend webinars to reinforce them to you, we could not help you retain them.

This year, we will with you right from start. We are opening a dedicated wing in CD which will take care of all the academic needs.
